Self-esteem is often defined as having a positive attitude about yourself and the role that you play in the world around you. People with high self-esteem also have a strong sense of their abilities, feel in control of their lives and believe that they are capable of achieving their dreams. Considering all the positive benefits of having high self-esteem, it’s unfortunate that having low self-esteem seems to be such a common affliction these days. Between our busy lifestyles and constant pressure to perform well in our careers and within our social circles, it’s no wonder that many of us can be consumed by worry about how we look, speak and act in public.

Have you ever clammed up in the middle of a board meeting, even though you knew that your comment or idea could very well be the best thing to happen to your company since the invention of the Internet? Have you ever found yourself looking down while walking through the busy streets, thinking to yourself: “Don’t trip, because everyone will look and laugh at you?” And, on a more serious note, have you ever had one too many drinks simply to feel more confident about the way you look and feel?

Therefore, stop being your own worst critic, because no one else is thinking about you as harshly as you are! Let’s look at that example of walking down the street: notice how you’re so focused on you? Guess what: everyone else is focused on themselves too. Once you recognize that people are more focused on themselves than any “mistakes” or “flaws” that you may have, you’ll take that important step in learning how to build self-esteem.

FIND THINGS THAT YOU’RE GOOD AT. Everyone has a talent that they’re good at – and no protesting here, because you’re certainly good at something! Whether you can write a beautiful poem or make an invaluable member of your office team, it’s important to recognize and encourage your talents to grow. In fact, recruit a friend and have him/her tell you exactly what makes you special. Do you have a great singing voice? Are you a caring person who gives out great advice? Try signing up with a community choir, or volunteer at a local shelter, where your talents will be recognized, appreciated and deemed as extremely valuable.

GET OUTSIDE OF YOUR HEAD. Experts agree that people with low self-esteem are too inwardly focused. However, instead of being introspective, people with low self-esteem merely focus on their own faults and flaws. Guess what: if you want to learn how to build self-esteem, it’s time to get outside of your head! Volunteering represents a great opportunity to not only build a set of skills, but to build the kind of self-confidence that makes you feel in control of your life. Self esteem is your own personal view of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Everyone has a different view of themselves, but keeping a positive outlook will benefit you more than a negative one. Many individuals suffer from low self esteem for a variety of reasons and need to build their self esteem in order to succeed in life. Remember, the only one who can make you excel is you and no one else. The same goes for self esteem. The only person who can build up–or consequentially tear down–your self esteem is you. Although other individuals may aide the process, the end decision is yours.

People have low esteem for a variety of reasons. Some individuals suffer from poor body image and focus on all the negative traits of their physical appearance. Others have emotional issues that have caused their self esteem to drop or feel themselves unworthy of any praise. For whatever reasons your self esteem may falter, the key to building it up again is to find the root of the problem. Think of self esteem like a house, if you build a stunning house on a poor foundation, the entire structure will crumble. However, if you take steps to ensure the foundation is strong and capable of holding anything, the process may be slow, but your self esteem will be built soundly.

Many individuals look for help for their low self esteem in books or seminars. The number of available options on the market is phenomenal, and you are sure to find one on a topic that deals with your specific issues. Check out your local library or book store and explore their “self help” section for a book that you may find helpful. It is quite unlikely you will find the answers to all your problems in a book, but you may find it helpful to know others are in your same boat and you are certainly not alone. Additionally, you may wish to seek professional help in your quest to boost your self esteem.

Often, speaking with a qualified individual can help you determine the root of your problem and the necessary path you should take for the rebuilding process. Perhaps your problems dates back to childhood, or maybe it has recently developed. Whatever the case, a professional will be able to best determine your next step.

A main factor in self esteem is negativity. Negative thoughts can pervade your confidence and crumble your self esteem. If you find yourself surrounded by negative people or in a negative situation, try to best remedy the problem. Often, individuals in a abusive relationship have their self esteem shattered when a supposed loved one constantly berates them and questions their worth.

Similarly, a negative workplace environment can lower your self esteem with colleagues or bosses finding fault with your work. Maybe you have a friend who is consistently negative with all surrounding him or her. Whatever the source, distancing yourself from the negativity will help you regain your self esteem. Strive to surround yourself with positive people. If you are going through a rough time in your personal life, you may wish to join a support group. Similarly, there are support groups available for individuals with self image issues. These groups will allow you to meet other individuals like yourself and provide a forum for you to sound your hopes and achievements.

However you choose to begin building your self esteem, do so today! Be thorough and consistent with the process and be aware it may take a while. You should not become impatient or despondent if you find your self esteem slipping. Remember, you are an important and worthy person and should treat yourself as such.

Only a few people truly understand the significance of self awareness. The important thing to remember is that once you have developed it to a high level you can plan the way you challenge your goals more successfully. It is about mastering growth and development. Self awareness gives you the ability to master your surroundings to the best of your capability.

It is not easy gaining positive personal development through self awareness because it is not always easy to take a good honest inventory of yourself as you may not like what you see. The fact is that by taking a good long hard look at yourself is what you need to do if you want to change any negative aspect of yourself. You need to see what needs to be changed. Without the skill of self awareness you will never be that different person you wish to be. Always remember self awareness is part and parcel of personal development. You cannot have personal development without self awareness. So don’t hesitate take an inventory of yourself and be the confident and positive person you deserve to be!

Many people suffer with low self esteem. The interesting thing is that your self esteem is not dependent on the facts, it is dependent on your interpretation of the facts. Here is a simple strategy to improve your self esteem in such a way that it improves your life as well.

Self esteem is determined by how you habitually think about yourself and the events of your life. This habitual thinking pattern creates a self image that determines how you feel about yourself and it may be an image that is anywhere between being totally in line with the facts to being totally misaligned with the facts.

Some peoples’ self esteem is far higher than the facts warrant while others have self esteem that is far lower than the facts would suggest it should be.

So what makes a healthy self esteem? A healthy self esteem is one that allows you to appreciate yourself and have self confidence, while at the same time keeping you grounded enough that you are aware that you could still benefit from self development.

The first step to achieving this balance is to show appreciation for who you are.

No matter who you are and no matter what your current level of self esteem is you will definitely have good points. An important step in acquiring and maintaining healthy self esteem is to appreciate those good points.

Our society tends to admire the extremes; the rich, the famous, the slim, the beautiful, the clever, the talented, and so on. While this is fine in itself, the problem exists that our society also looks down on those who aren’t in those categories. This can lead to you developing self critical habits early in life and maintaining those habits throughout your life.

This low self esteem then often becomes a self fulfilling prophesy because it stops you from setting goals and working successfully towards them.

Make a decision today to appreciate all of your good points and to congratulate yourself for being so fortunate as to have all these good qualities.

The second step is to eliminate critical self talk.

It’s amazing to hear how people talk to themselves when things go wrong. They will call themselves idiots. They will tell themselves that nothing ever works out well for me. They will be critical in every way without even stopping to think of the damage that they are inflicting on themselves by this verbal criticism.

Imagine that you want to help a child to learn to tie her own shoe laces. Would you be understanding of the difficulties and encouraging of her efforts or would you say “why are so stupid? Any idiot can tie their shoelaces but you are so useless that all you do is mess it up”? I sincerely hope that you would use the first method.

This first method of encouragement and understanding is exactly how you should speak to yourself. Your subconscious mind, which is where your self esteem resides, is far more like a little child than it is like your adult conscious mind. Develop the habit of speaking to yourself with respect, encouragement and understanding.

The third step is to ignore or counteract the non constructive criticism from others.

Have you ever found that sometimes other people can be unjustly critical of your goals or of your behavior? Being critical of others is simply a sign of poor personal development. It is an unfortunate truth that you will encounter these enlightened folk on a regular basis so you need to have a strategy for dealing with them.

There are basically two strategies that you could use.

The first is to ignore the comments or to not mix with people who give empty criticism.

The second is to counteract that criticism by saying to yourself mentally that the criticism is unfounded and that you refuse to allow such nonsense into your mind.

The fourth step is to set a goal and then break it into small steps and focus on the current step.

You can build your self esteem by setting goals and then breaking down the achievement of that goal into a progression of simple, easy steps. Then as you achieve each step you congratulate yourself on your progress and reinforce that you are a successful person who is making good progress toward a worthwhile goal.

The fifth step is to keep a success book

Keeping a success book is an excellent and fun way to develop a health self esteem. You simply record in the book, each and every day, at least one success you had that day. The success doesn’t have to be earth shattering. As long as you achieved something, no matter how small, then it can go into the book.

This habit helps you become aware, on a daily basis, that you are actually achieving things. Also, if you have times when your self esteem is down then you can lift it by taking out your success book and reading it.

A natural side effect of keeping this book is that over time your daily successes will be getting bigger and more impressive and you will be able to see that you are actually becoming a more successful person as time goes by.

If you combine these five simple steps, and persist with them long enough for them to become habits, then you will develop and maintain a healthy self esteem that will steer your life to happiness.

Writing them will bring them alive so you can keep rereading your goals repeatedly. The process of rereading your goals regularly enables your mind and brain to relearn previous negative thought patterns substituting them with positive thoughts.

As you start to experience success in your goals, inevitably you will feel better about yourself. This process can also relieve stress and help prevent heart disease. Changing your negative self-talk to positive can set you on the right path to success in whatever area you want to see change.
